KEY VERSE
“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?””
— John 11:25–26
ROOTED TRUTH
Jesus does not merely promise resurrection someday; He is the Resurrection. Death, the enemy we cannot defeat, has already met its match. Even in our deepest grief, we are held by the One who has authority over the grave.
FAITH STORY
Lazarus was sick, and his sisters, Mary and Martha, sent word to Jesus. They expected Him to come quickly. Instead, He waited two more days. By the time He arrived, Lazarus had been in the tomb four days.
Martha met Him on the road, grieving and honest. “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” There was ache in her words, and maybe a little accusation. Jesus did not scold her. He met her in her pain.
Then He said something that changed everything: “I am the resurrection and the life.” Notice He did not say, “I will give you resurrection someday.” He said, “I am.” Resurrection is not merely an event; it is a Person, standing right in front of her.
And then came the question that He asks of each of us: “Do you believe this?” Not, “Do you understand this?” Martha did not fully understand. But she answered with faith: “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”
What happened next is one of the most tender scenes in Scripture. Jesus went to the tomb, and John 11:35 records the shortest verse in the Bible: “Jesus wept.” The One who was about to raise Lazarus still wept with those who mourned. He is not distant from our grief.
Then He called, “Lazarus, come out!” and the dead man walked out of the tomb. It was a preview of what Jesus would do in His own resurrection, and what He will do for all who belong to Him. Paul says Christ is “the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.”
If you are grieving today, hear this: the grave does not have the last word. The Resurrection and the Life is with you, weeping beside you, and promising that death is not the end.
SCRIPTURE FOR DEEPER ROOTS
1 Corinthians 15:20 — “But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.”
Romans 8:11 — “And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit, who lives in you.”
John 11:35 — “Jesus wept.”
DAILY PRACTICE
Think of a loss or area of death in your life: a relationship, a dream, a loved one. Bring it honestly to Jesus in prayer. Then read John 11:25–26 aloud, and answer His question in your own words: “Lord, I believe.”
DAILY PRAYER
Jesus, Resurrection and Life, You know the grief I carry. Thank You that You are not distant from it. Help me to believe Your promise that death is not the end. Breathe life into the places in me that feel buried, and give me hope that does not fade. Amen.
DEEP REFLECTION
1. Where have you felt, like Martha, that Jesus came too late or didn’t show up the way you expected?
2. What does it mean to you that Jesus wept before He raised Lazarus?
3. How would your daily life change if you lived with a deep confidence in the resurrection?
