Tuesday, November 3, 2026–A Heart of Thanksgiving — A Life of Gratitude: Remember What He Has Done

KEY VERSE

“Praise the LORD, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—”

— Psalm 103:2

ROOTED TRUTH

Gratitude grows where memory is kept alive. We are quick to forget what God has done and to focus on what we still need. Intentionally remembering His faithfulness is how we feed a thankful heart.

FAITH STORY

David wrote Psalm 103 as a kind of conversation with his own soul: “Praise the LORD, my soul.” Notice that he talks to himself. He knows that his heart needs to be reminded of what is true. Our souls forget quickly, so we have to speak to them.

And what does he want his soul to remember? “All his benefits.” He goes on to list them: God forgives all your sins, heals your diseases, redeems your life from the pit, crowns you with love and compassion, and satisfies your desires with good things. It is a long list, and he wants every item remembered.

Forgetting is one of the great dangers of the spiritual life. Throughout the Old Testament, God’s people forget. They see the Red Sea part, and a few weeks later they are grumbling in the desert. We do much the same. A prayer is answered on Monday, and by Friday we are anxious again.

God knew we would forget, so He built reminders into the life of His people. When Israel crossed the Jordan, Joshua had them set up stones as a memorial, so that when their children asked, “What do these stones mean?” they could tell the story of God’s faithfulness.

Samuel did something similar. After a great victory, he set up a stone and named it Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the LORD has helped us.” Notice the humble honesty of that phrase. He did not say the journey was over. He said, “Thus far,” and trusted that the One who had helped him so far would keep helping.

We need our own Ebenezers: a journal of answered prayers, a list of milestones, a reminder on the wall, a story told at the dinner table. These are the stones that help us remember in the seasons when God feels quiet.

Today, take time to look back. Where has the Lord brought you? What has He done? Let that memory fuel your thanks and your trust for whatever is ahead.

SCRIPTURE FOR DEEPER ROOTS

Psalm 77:11 — “I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.”

Joshua 4:7 — “These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.”

1 Samuel 7:12 — “Thus far the LORD has helped us.”

DAILY PRACTICE

Create your own “Ebenezer” today. Write down five specific ways God has been faithful to you over the years, and keep the list somewhere you will see it. Read it aloud and add one new entry each week.

DAILY PRAYER

Faithful Lord, I confess how quickly I forget what You have done. Help me to remember Your goodness and to speak truth to my own soul. Thank You for every way You have carried me thus far. I trust You with everything still ahead. Amen.

DEEP REFLECTION

1.  What does it mean to “preach to your own soul” the way David does in Psalm 103?

2.  What are some of your “Ebenezers,” the moments when you clearly saw God help you?

3.  What practical reminders could you build into your life to keep God’s faithfulness in view?
