Monday, November 2, 2026–A Heart of Thanksgiving — A Life of Gratitude: The One Who Came Back

KEY VERSE

“One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.”

— Luke 17:15–16

ROOTED TRUTH

Receiving a blessing and returning to thank the Giver are two different things. Ten were healed, but only one came back. Gratitude turns a gift into a relationship.

FAITH STORY

Ten men stood at a distance, calling out for mercy. They had leprosy, a disease that made them outcasts. They were forced to live apart from their families and their communities, and to cry out, “Unclean!” to warn others away. They had lost almost everything.

When they saw Jesus, they cried, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” He did not touch them or say a long prayer. He simply told them, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” That was the step required for someone declared clean. It meant walking in faith before they could see a change.

As they went, Luke tells us, they were cleansed. All ten. Imagine the joy of seeing your skin made whole, of knowing you could go home again. Nine of them kept going, no doubt eager to get their lives back.

But one turned around. When he saw he was healed, he came back, praising God in a loud voice, and fell at Jesus’ feet. Luke adds a detail that matters: “and he was a Samaritan.” He was the outsider among outsiders, the one least expected to understand.

Jesus’ response is tender and honest. “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?” It is not that He needed their thanks. It is that the nine missed something. They received the gift but not the Giver.

Then Jesus said to the one who returned, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.” Many scholars note that all ten were healed, but this man received something more: wholeness. His gratitude took him beyond the miracle to the Miracle-Worker.

It is easy to be one of the nine, so absorbed in the blessing that we forget to look up. Today, be the one who comes back. Turn around, return to Jesus, and tell Him thank you.

SCRIPTURE FOR DEEPER ROOTS

Luke 17:19 — “Then he said to him, ‘Rise and go; your faith has made you well.’”

Psalm 116:12 — “What shall I return to the LORD for all his goodness to me?”

Hebrews 12:28 — “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe.”

DAILY PRACTICE

Think of a prayer God has answered that you never took time to thank Him for. Go back to it today. Write a short thank-you note to God, naming exactly what He did, and read it aloud as an act of worship.

DAILY PRAYER

Jesus, forgive me for the times I have received Your gifts and moved on without stopping to thank You. Like the one who came back, I turn to You today with a grateful heart. Thank You for healing, for mercy, and for every blessing I have taken for granted. Amen.

DEEP REFLECTION

1.  Which blessing in your life have you received without really stopping to thank God for it?

2.  Why do you think the nine did not come back, and in what ways might you be like them?

3.  What would it look like to “turn around” and thank Jesus today?
