Wednesday, October 28, 2026–The “I AM” Statements of Jesus: I Am The Gate

KEY VERSE

“I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture.”

— John 10:9

ROOTED TRUTH

Jesus is not one of many ways in; He is the only way in. But He is also not a locked door that keeps people out. He is an open gate that welcomes, protects, and leads us into abundant life.

FAITH STORY

In the first century, shepherds often kept their sheep at night in a simple enclosure of stones or thornbushes, with a single opening. Some shepherds would lie across that opening, becoming the gate themselves. Nothing could enter or leave without passing by him.

Jesus uses this image: “I am the gate.” This statement is about access and safety. A gate is where we pass from outside to inside, from danger to shelter. In Christ, we move from separation from God to His presence.

Notice that there is only one gate. This is a narrow claim, and Jesus intended it to be. Not because He wants to exclude, but because He is the only One who has opened the way. He is the only One who paid the price to bring us in.

But what a welcome awaits on the other side! “They will come in and go out, and find pasture.” This is not a picture of confinement. It is freedom: coming in for rest and protection, going out for work and life, and finding nourishment all along the way.

Many of us picture God’s door as locked or guarded, as if we must prove ourselves worthy before we can approach. But the Gate stands open. Ephesians tells us that “through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.” Access is already given.

Jesus also says in Revelation, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with them.” He is both the Gate we enter and the One who knocks on the door of our hearts.

If you have been standing outside, hesitating, hear His invitation today. Come in. If you are already inside, rest in the safety He provides, and then go out with confidence to live the abundant life He offers.

SCRIPTURE FOR DEEPER ROOTS

Ephesians 2:18 — “For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.”

Revelation 3:20 — “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with them, and they with me.”

Matthew 7:7 — “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”

DAILY PRACTICE

Take a moment to picture yourself walking through an open gate into the presence of Jesus. Name one worry or burden you have been carrying outside the gate, and leave it with Him. Thank Him for the open access you have to the Father.

DAILY PRAYER

Jesus, You are the Gate, and I thank You for opening the way to the Father. Help me to come in with confidence and rest in Your protection. Lead me out into the life You have for me, and let me find nourishment in You. Amen.

DEEP REFLECTION

1.  Have you ever felt like the door to God was closed to you? What does Jesus’ invitation say to that feeling?

2.  What does it look like for you to “come in and go out” in a healthy rhythm of rest and service?

3.  Who in your life needs to hear that the Gate is open?
