KEY VERSE
“Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.””
— John 6:35
ROOTED TRUTH
We were created with deep hungers that only God can satisfy. Jesus does not simply give bread; He is the Bread. He offers Himself as the One who truly nourishes the soul.
FAITH STORY
The day before He made this statement, Jesus had fed more than five thousand people with five small barley loaves and two fish. The crowd was thrilled. They followed Him across the lake the next day, looking for another meal.
Jesus gently redirected them. “You are looking for me,” He said, “not because you saw signs, but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.” They wanted the gift without the Giver. And then He told them what they really needed: Himself.
The crowd brought up manna, the bread God had provided for Israel in the wilderness. It was a miracle, but it did not last. Those who ate it still died, and the next day they had to gather it again. Jesus offered something of a different kind: bread that satisfies forever.
We know what it is to be hungry in ways food cannot fix. We chase success, approval, comfort, entertainment, and relationships, hoping to feel full. They give a bite of satisfaction, but the hunger returns. Jesus names the root problem: we were made for Him.
Notice the invitation inside the promise: “Whoever comes to me.” Bread is no use sitting on a shelf. It must be received. Coming to Jesus means bringing our emptiness to Him instead of trying to fill it ourselves.
Jesus once told the tempter, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Daily time in His Word is one of the ways we feed on Him. He is not a one-time meal; He is our daily bread.
What are you hungry for today? Come to the Bread of Life. He will not turn you away, and you will not leave empty.
SCRIPTURE FOR DEEPER ROOTS
Exodus 16:4 — “Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘I will rain down bread from heaven for you.’”
Matthew 4:4 — “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
Psalm 107:9 — “for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.”
DAILY PRACTICE
Before you reach for your phone or breakfast tomorrow, spend five minutes reading a passage of Scripture and asking, “Jesus, feed my soul.” Notice what you are most hungry for today, and bring that hunger to Him.
DAILY PRAYER
Jesus, Bread of Life, I confess that I have tried to fill my hunger with things that cannot satisfy. I come to You today empty and needy. Feed me with Your presence and Your Word. Be enough for me. Amen.
DEEP REFLECTION
1. What are you most often hungry for apart from Jesus: approval, comfort, success, control?
2. What is the difference between wanting God’s gifts and wanting God Himself?
3. What is one practical way you can feed on Jesus daily this week?
