KEY VERSE
“Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised… They all joined together constantly in prayer.”
— Acts 1:4, 14
ROOTED TRUTH
Waiting on God is not sitting on our hands. The first believers waited in prayer, in community, and in obedience. Biblical waiting is active: we keep doing what God has already told us to do while we trust Him for what He has promised.
FAITH STORY
Jesus had been crucified, buried, and raised. For forty days He appeared to His disciples. Now He was about to ascend. His last instruction to them was striking: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised.”
Imagine being one of them. They had just seen the risen Lord. They were eager. They wanted to do something, anything. But Jesus said wait. They were not ready for what was coming, and the power they needed could not be manufactured.
So what did they do while they waited? Acts 1:14 tells us: “They all joined together constantly in prayer.” They didn’t scatter. They didn’t strategize a campaign. They gathered in an upper room and prayed.
Notice how their waiting looked. They were together, about 120 people, men and women, including Mary and Jesus’ brothers. They were praying, constantly. And they were obedient: they stayed where Jesus told them to stay.
They even took a practical step in Acts 1, choosing a replacement for Judas, because Scripture directed them to. Waiting didn’t mean doing nothing; it meant doing the next faithful thing.
Then, in Acts 2, the Holy Spirit came with wind and fire, and the church was born. The waiting was not wasted. It was preparation for the most powerful outpouring in history.
What is the “next faithful thing” in your waiting? Pray. Gather with believers. Obey what God has already made clear. Don’t try to force the promise. Prepare your heart for it.
SCRIPTURE FOR DEEPER ROOTS
Acts 1:8 — “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Acts 2:1 — “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.”
Luke 24:49 — “I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
DAILY PRACTICE
Choose two active expressions of waiting for today: one prayer (set aside ten focused minutes) and one act of obedience (something God has already asked of you). Reach out to one believer and ask them to pray with you about what you’re waiting on.
DAILY PRAYER
Lord Jesus, You told Your disciples to wait, and they waited in prayer and unity. Teach me to wait actively, faithfully doing what You have already shown me while I trust You for what is to come. Keep me from rushing ahead or giving up. Amen.
DEEP REFLECTION
1. Is there a way you’ve been waiting passively that God might be calling you to wait actively?
2. What is one thing God has already asked you to do that you can do faithfully today?
3. Who could you join in prayer as you wait?
