Thursday, October 15, 2026–Between the Promise and the Answer — Waiting on God: When The Wait Is Hard—How Long?

KEY VERSE

“I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.”

— Psalm 40:1–2

ROOTED TRUTH

Not every wait feels peaceful. Some feel like a pit. God is not offended by the honest question “How long?” Faithful waiting makes room for lament, and the God who hears is the God who lifts.

FAITH STORY

We sometimes picture patient waiting as serene and smiling. But read the Psalms and you’ll find something different. Over and over, the people of God cry out, “How long, LORD?” They wait, and it hurts.

Psalm 13 opens with four consecutive “how longs.” “How long, LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?” David doesn’t pretty it up. He pours out the ache.

And yet look at where Psalm 13 ends: “But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.” The honesty didn’t destroy his faith. It carried him through to trust.

Psalm 40 pictures the wait as a pit: slimy, muddy, hard to climb out of. The psalmist says he “waited patiently.” But anyone who has been in a pit knows patience there doesn’t mean calm. It means not giving up on the One who can lift you.

Notice the verbs God uses: He turned, He heard, He lifted, He set, He gave. The psalmist’s part is to wait and cry. God’s part is to do everything else. We are not asked to climb out in our own strength.

If your wait is hard today, you don’t have to fake cheerfulness. Tell God how heavy it is. Ask your “how long.” Then, like David, anchor yourself in His unfailing love, because the One who hears is the One who is faithful.

Habakkuk 2:3 offers a steadying word: “For the revelation awaits an appointed time… Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.” The delay you feel is not delay on God’s calendar.

SCRIPTURE FOR DEEPER ROOTS

Psalm 13:1 — “How long, LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?”

Psalm 40:3 — “He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the LORD and put their trust in him.”

Habakkuk 2:3 — “For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.”

DAILY PRACTICE

Write your own short lament today. Begin with “How long, Lord?” and be honest. Then end with one sentence of trust: “But I trust in Your unfailing love.” Pray it aloud.

DAILY PRAYER

Lord, You know how heavy this season feels. I bring my honest questions to You, my how longs and my tears. Thank You that You hear. Lift me from the pit, set my feet on solid rock, and help me trust Your unfailing love while I wait. Amen.

DEEP REFLECTION

1.  What is your honest “how long” right now?

2.  Why is it important that Scripture includes laments, and not only praise?

3.  Which of God’s actions in Psalm 40:1–2 (turned, heard, lifted, set, gave) do you most need today?
