Wednesday, October 14, 2026–Between the Promise and the Answer — Waiting on God: Simeon and Anna—Waiting Faithfully For Decades

KEY VERSE

“Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation.”

— Luke 2:29–30

ROOTED TRUTH

Some waits last weeks. Some last years. Simeon and Anna waited a lifetime, and they never stopped hoping. Faithful waiting is not measured by how soon the answer comes, but by whether we are still looking when it arrives.

FAITH STORY

The temple courts in Jerusalem were busy the day Mary and Joseph arrived with their baby. Crowds moved through. Priests did their work. Nobody noticed a young couple with a poor family’s offering, a pair of doves. Nobody except two people who had been watching for decades.

Luke tells us Simeon was “righteous and devout,” waiting for the consolation of Israel. The Holy Spirit had promised him he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. We aren’t told how old he was, but the picture is of a man whose whole life leaned toward one moment.

Then there was Anna, a prophetess, widowed young and now eighty-four. Luke says she “never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.” Year after year, she showed up. No one would have blamed her for giving up. She didn’t.

What strikes me is how ordinary the fulfillment looked. The Messiah did not arrive with trumpets. He came as an infant in his mother’s arms. Only faithful, watching eyes could recognize what they were seeing.

This is a crucial lesson of waiting: if we stop watching, we can miss the answer when it comes in an unexpected form. Simeon and Anna recognized Jesus because they had spent years training their hearts to look for God.

Simeon takes the child in his arms and says he can depart in peace. The wait was long, but the fulfillment was worth every year. He held in his hands what he had hoped for his whole life.

If you’ve been waiting a long time, take heart from these two. Their decades were not wasted. God honored every prayer, every fast, every day of faithfulness. Keep showing up. Your Anna and Simeon moment may be nearer than you think.

SCRIPTURE FOR DEEPER ROOTS

Luke 2:25 — “Simeon… was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him.”

Hebrews 6:15 — “And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.”

Galatians 6:9 — “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

DAILY PRACTICE

Identify one spiritual rhythm (morning prayer, Scripture reading, worship) that you can show up for faithfully this week, whether or not you see results. Be an Anna: keep showing up.

DAILY PRAYER

Faithful God, thank You for the example of Simeon and Anna. Keep my heart watching and my hands holding on to You, however long the wait. Help me not to miss Your answer because I stopped looking. I trust Your timing. Amen.

DEEP REFLECTION

1.  What would it take for you to keep showing up faithfully even if the answer took decades?

2.  Is there an answer from God you might be missing because it looks different from what you expected?

3.  Who is an “Anna” or “Simeon” in your life whose faithfulness you can learn from?
