Tuesday, October 6, 2026–Dwelling Place: The Presence Of God—A Tent In The Wilderness

KEY VERSE

“Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.”

— Exodus 40:34

ROOTED TRUTH

The glory that filled the tabernacle did not belong to a golden city or a marble temple. It settled on a portable tent in the middle of a wilderness, because God chose to travel with His people wherever they went.

FAITH STORY

Exodus ends with a scene of staggering beauty.

After months of construction, every board, curtain, clasp, and piece of furniture was finally in place. Moses set up the tabernacle exactly as the LORD had commanded. And then the cloud covered the tent, and the glory of the LORD filled it. Moses could not even enter. The presence of God was so weighty that the man who had spoken with Him face to face stepped back.

Think about the setting. This was not Jerusalem. There was no stone, no gold-plated skyline, no architectural wonder. It was a tent in the desert, set in the middle of a people who were homeless, anxious, and still learning how to trust. And God moved in.

It was a moving house. When the cloud lifted, the people packed up and followed. When the cloud settled, they camped. Their entire life was organized around the presence of God. They did not decide where to go and then ask God to come along. They waited to see where He was going and went there.

Earlier, when Israel’s sin had threatened to end the journey, Moses prayed a stunning prayer: if your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. He understood what mattered most. The promised land without God’s presence was not worth entering. The wilderness with His presence was a place worth staying.

John picks up this very image to describe Jesus. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. The Greek word behind that phrase is related to the word for tent. God pitched His tent in human flesh and walked among us.

The wilderness you may be walking through today is not a place God has abandoned. It is exactly the sort of place where He pitches His tent.

SCRIPTURE FOR DEEPER ROOTS

Exodus 40:34–38 — The glory fills the tabernacle and guides the journey.

Exodus 33:15 — “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.”

John 1:14 — “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.”

DAILY PRACTICE

Moses would not move without the presence of God. Is there a decision or direction you are pursuing without having first asked, is Your presence going with me in this? Write down one area where you have been moving on your own momentum. Then pray Moses’ prayer over it: if Your Presence does not go with me, do not send me from here. Be willing to wait, like Israel with the cloud, until you sense His leading.

DAILY PRAYER

Lord, I want to organize my life around Your presence rather than around my plans. So often I decide where I am going and then ask You to bless it. Teach me to wait for the cloud, to move when You move and rest when You rest. And in my own wilderness, remind me that You have pitched Your tent right here, among the dust and the uncertainty. If Your presence does not go with me, I do not want to go. Amen.

DEEP REFLECTION

1.  Israel’s schedule was set by the movement of the cloud, not by their own preferences. What would it look like for you to let the presence of God, rather than your own comfort or ambition, set the rhythm of your life?

2.  Moses said he would rather stay in the wilderness than enter the promised land without God’s presence. Would you make the same trade? What does your answer reveal about what you want most?

3.  John says Jesus pitched His tent among us. What does it mean to you that God did not remain at a safe distance but chose the tent, the dust, the vulnerability of dwelling among people?
