KEY VERSE
“Then have them make a sanctuary for me, and I will dwell among them.”
— Exodus 25:8
ROOTED TRUTH
The deepest desire of God’s heart is not for our performance, our service, or even our worship. It is for us. From the first page of the Bible to the last, the story is the same: God wants to be with His people.
FAITH STORY
If you read the Bible from beginning to end looking for a single thread that holds it all together, you could make a strong case for this one: God wants to be with us.
He walks in a garden in the cool of the day. He travels with a nomadic people in a pillar of cloud and fire. He asks for a tent to be built so that He can live in the middle of their camp. He fills a temple with glory. He becomes flesh and makes His dwelling among us. He sends His Spirit to live inside His people. And the Bible closes with a voice from the throne announcing that God’s dwelling place is now among the people.
Exodus 25:8 is one of the most remarkable sentences in all of Scripture. The God who created the universe, who needs nothing, who cannot be contained by the highest heavens, says to a group of freed slaves: build Me a sanctuary, and I will dwell among you.
Notice the purpose. Not so that you can impress Me. Not so that you can earn My favor. So that I can live among you. The tabernacle was never meant to be a monument to human religious effort. It was an invitation: come close. I want to be near.
Many believers carry a quiet assumption that God is holding us at arm’s length until we get ourselves together. The Bible tells a different story. God is the One who keeps closing the distance. The holiness that sets Him apart is the same holiness that makes it so costly and so wonderful that He chooses to come close.
This week we will trace the presence of God through Scripture: in the garden, in the wilderness tent, in the valley of the shadow of death, in the places we try to hide, through the torn veil, and into the eternal city where God Himself will be with us. We will also ask a practical question: how do we live today in the awareness of a presence that is already here?
Come to this week as someone who is wanted. That is where the whole story begins.
SCRIPTURE FOR DEEPER ROOTS
Exodus 25:8–9 — The instruction to build the sanctuary.
Leviticus 26:12 — “I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people.”
Zephaniah 3:17 — “The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves.”
DAILY PRACTICE
Take five minutes today to sit quietly and ask yourself honestly: do I believe that God wants to be with me, or do I believe He tolerates me until I improve? Write down your honest answer. Then read Exodus 25:8 aloud, slowly, and receive it as a statement about God’s heart toward you. Ask Him to replace any sense of distance with the truth that He is the One who has been closing the gap all along.
DAILY PRAYER
Father, I confess that I sometimes live as though You are far away, waiting for me to earn my way closer. But You are the God who asks for a tent so You can live among Your people. You are the God who wants to be with me. Open my heart this week to believe that, and to notice Your presence in the ordinary places I have been walking right past. I am here, and I am glad that You are too. Amen.
DEEP REFLECTION
1. The tabernacle was God’s idea, not Israel’s. What does it tell you about the heart of God that He initiated the building of a place where He could live among a people who had just built a golden calf?
2. Do you tend to believe that God wants to be with you, or that He is waiting for you to get your life in order first? Where does that belief come from, and how does it affect the way you pray?
3. If the central thread of the Bible is God’s desire to be with His people, how might that change what you hope for from your spiritual life, and what you stop being afraid of?
