Thursday, October 22, 2026–The Shepherd’s Psalm — Psalm 23: A Table In The Presence Of My Enemies

KEY VERSE

“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.”

— Psalm 23:5a

ROOTED TRUTH

God does not always remove the opposition before He blesses us. Sometimes He sets a table in the middle of it. His provision is not canceled by the presence of what troubles us, and His peace can be real even while the enemy watches.

FAITH STORY

In verse 5, the image changes again. The shepherd becomes a host, and the pasture becomes a banquet hall. “You prepare a table before me.” Someone has gone ahead and made everything ready.

The surprising detail is where the table is set: “in the presence of my enemies.” David does not say the enemies have gone away. They are still there, watching. And yet in their very sight, God serves him a feast.

In the ancient Near East, hospitality was sacred. A guest who was welcomed to a host’s table was under that host’s protection. To be invited to the table meant, “You are mine, and no one will harm you here.” The enemies can look, but they cannot touch.

This is a striking picture of God’s care. We often pray for our problems to disappear before we can enjoy God’s goodness. But Psalm 23 shows us a God who can feed our souls, and give us peace and confidence, right in the middle of difficulty.

Think of Jesus, who sat at table with Judas. Think of the Last Supper, held in the shadow of the cross. Our Lord knows what it is to be fed and to give thanks in the presence of enemies. He has gone before us.

Perhaps you have opposition today: a difficult person, a hostile workplace, a battle of your own mind, or a situation that feels stacked against you. You may not be able to change it. But you can sit down at the Lord’s table. You can eat, receive, and be strengthened.

Paul wrote, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” The enemies may still be near, but the Host is greater. Come and taste His goodness today.

SCRIPTURE FOR DEEPER ROOTS

Romans 8:31 — “If God is for us, who can be against us?”

Psalm 34:8 — “Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.”

Matthew 5:44 — “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

DAILY PRACTICE

Choose one situation of opposition or stress. Before you face it today, sit for a few minutes and thank God for specific provisions He has already given you. Receive them as a “meal at His table” before you step back into the fight.

DAILY PRAYER

Lord, thank You that You are not limited by my circumstances. You prepare a table for me even when trouble is near. Help me to sit down, receive from You, and trust Your protection. Fill me with Your peace, and help me respond to those who oppose me with Your grace. Amen.

DEEP REFLECTION

1.  Where do you feel opposition or pressure right now?

2.  How does it change your perspective to know that God can provide for you in the middle of difficulty, not only after it ends?

3.  What is one way you can “sit at the table” and receive from God today?
