Wednesday, October 21, 2026–The Shepherd’s Psalm — Psalm 23: Through The Valley

KEY VERSE

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

— Psalm 23:4

ROOTED TRUTH

The psalm does not promise a life without valleys. It promises a Shepherd who walks through them with us. Notice the shift: in the valley, David stops talking about God and starts talking to Him: “you are with me.”

FAITH STORY

Up to this point, Psalm 23 has been green pastures and quiet waters. Then, in verse 4, the landscape changes. “Even though I walk through the darkest valley.” The honest truth of Scripture is that the valleys are real, and every believer walks through them.

Notice the word “through.” David does not say he camps in the valley or lives there. The valley is a passage, not a destination. Shepherds led their flocks through deep ravines to reach higher pastures on the other side. The dark places are part of the path to somewhere better.

Notice also how the language of the psalm shifts. In verses 1–3, David speaks about the Shepherd: “He makes me… He leads me…” But in the valley he speaks directly to Him: “you are with me.” Something about the darkness draws us from talking about God to talking to God.

“I will fear no evil” is not because there is no evil. It is because of the presence: “for you are with me.” The fear does not vanish because of a change in circumstances. It is overcome by a change in company.

What of the rod and staff? The rod was a short club used to defend the flock against predators. The staff, with its curved crook, was used to guide the sheep and to pull them back from the edge. Both are expressions of the Shepherd’s care: protection and guidance.

Perhaps you are in a valley today, in grief, in uncertainty, in illness, in a season that feels dark. Hear this: you are not walking alone, and you are not walking aimlessly. Jesus promised, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Let David’s words become yours today, even if you have to whisper them: “You are with me.” That is enough for the next step.

SCRIPTURE FOR DEEPER ROOTS

Isaiah 43:2 — “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.”

Deuteronomy 31:6 — “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

John 16:33 — “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

DAILY PRACTICE

Name one “valley” you are walking through. Pray Psalm 23:4 aloud, changing the first line to fit your situation. Then say out loud, “You are with me,” and thank the Shepherd for His rod and staff in that specific area.

DAILY PRAYER

Lord, You know the valley I am in. I will not pretend it isn’t dark. But I thank You that You are with me. Hold me with Your staff, protect me with Your rod, and comfort me with Your presence. Lead me through, and help me fear no evil because You are near. Amen.

DEEP REFLECTION

1.  What valley are you walking through right now, or have you walked through recently?

2.  How does it change your view of the valley to know that it is a place you walk “through” and not a place you stay?

3.  In what ways have you experienced God’s comfort through His presence, not just a change in circumstances?
