Sunday, October 11, 2026–Between the Promise and the Answer — Waiting on God: Waiting Is Not Wasted Time

KEY VERSE

“Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.”

— Psalm 27:14

ROOTED TRUTH

We tend to treat waiting as a pause in the story, the dull stretch between what God promised and what God delivers. But Scripture treats waiting as part of the story itself. The roots of a tree grow deepest in seasons when nothing seems to be happening above ground. God is never idle while you wait, and neither is He wasting you.

FAITH STORY

Think about the last time you sat in a waiting room. You checked your phone. You flipped through a magazine you didn’t care about. You watched the clock and felt the minutes drag. Most of us approach waiting this way: as something to get through, something to endure until real life resumes.

But consider a seed. When a farmer plants it in the autumn, nothing visible happens for weeks. The field looks empty. A passerby would assume the farmer had wasted his effort. Yet beneath the surface, the seed is splitting, sending down a root, anchoring itself for a harvest no one can yet see.

David, who wrote Psalm 27, knew the ache of waiting. He had been anointed king as a boy, yet he spent years hiding in caves, running from Saul, and wondering whether the promise would ever come true. The man who wrote “wait for the LORD” was not writing from a comfortable chair. He wrote from the wilderness.

Notice how David words it. He doesn’t say, “Wait, and stop feeling anything.” He says, “Be strong and take heart.” Waiting, in Scripture, takes courage. It is not passive resignation; it is active trust, choosing again each morning to believe that God is good and God is on time.

The Hebrew word for wait here, qavah, carries the idea of hope stretched toward something certain. It is not wishful thinking. It is leaning your weight on a promise you cannot yet see fulfilled, because you know the One who made it.

Here is the freeing truth for this week: the season you are in is not a detour. God is forming something in you that the answer alone could never form. Patience, depth, dependence, and a faith that doesn’t crumble the moment circumstances shift. These grow only in the waiting.

Maybe you are waiting on a diagnosis, a job, a prodigal child, a relationship to heal, or simply for clarity about the next step. Whatever it is, hear this: the waiting is not a sign that God has forgotten you. It may be the very place He is doing His deepest work.

SCRIPTURE FOR DEEPER ROOTS

Psalm 27:1 — “The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?”

Psalm 37:7 — “Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways.”

Romans 8:25 — “But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.”

DAILY PRACTICE

Write down one thing you are currently waiting on. Beside it, write one way God might be growing you while you wait. Each time you feel impatient today, whisper Psalm 27:14 as a prayer instead of a complaint.

DAILY PRAYER

Lord, I confess that I often treat waiting as wasted time. Teach me to see this season through Your eyes. Give me courage to take heart, strength to keep trusting, and eyes to notice the roots You are growing in me. I place what I am waiting for into Your hands today. Amen.

DEEP REFLECTION

1.  What are you waiting on God for right now, and how have you been responding to the wait?

2.  In what ways might God be using this season to grow something in you that the answer alone could not?

3.  What would it look like to “take heart” today instead of giving in to discouragement?
